[Salon] Mark Carney Becomes the Canadian Starmer

Mark Carney Becomes the Canadian Starmer

The Carney Bait & Switch

Roger Boyd   7/9/25

A little comparison between the policies being implemented by Carney soon after being elected and those of British PM Starmer soon after he was elected:

  • Full on support for the Ukraine proxy war with Russia

  • Full on support for the Zionist genocide

  • Full on support for the anti-China propaganda

  • Pushing expanded authoritarian surveillance legislation

  • Masses of new money for the Military Industrial Complex (MIC)

  • Major cuts to government social spending

  • Playing poodle to the Trump master

Yep, that looks pretty much the same doesn’t it? The Canadians have been delivered to the Carney bait and switch, greatly aided by President Trump’s shenanigans that allowed Carney to portray himself as a nationalist standing up for Canada. But no, he is just the PM from Goldman Sachs; socially liberal autocratic and economically deeply neoliberal. Goldman Sachs alumni, Canadian central banker, UK central banker and now Canadian prime minister. A true servant of the oligarchy, no wonder Starmer and King Charles get on with him so well.

There was another such bait and switch in the early 1990s, when the Canadian electorate smashed the Progressive Conservatives for their North American Free Trade Agreement and highly regressive GST consumption tax. The Liberals who were delivered a solid majority had stated that they would reverse both if elected. But their leader Chretien did no such thing, while also making massive cuts to federal government expenditures because of a deep recession artificially created by a head of the Canadian central bank that was keeping domestic interest rates far too high. Those interest rates both collapsed the economy, reducing tax revenues and increasing social expenditures, and ballooned government debt interest payments. Instead of firing the central banker, Chretien carried out the oligarch policies of massive government spending cuts and keeping NAFTA and the GST. Chretien was the Clinton of Canada, driving neoliberalism deep into society; also massively deregulating the financial industry. It was Chretien who paved the way for Harper.

And now we have Carney carrying out the next step downward for Canadian society, as he pushes hard on a neoliberal and autocratic agenda. And just like Chretien with Harper, and Starmer with Farage, he sets the stage for another lurch to the right. Will the NDP prove up to the job of pulling in the other direction? At least the detestable Jagmeet Singh was at last forced out, but who will be the next NDP leader? The NDP are heavily tarnished with their facilitation of Liberal rule for so long. In the 1990s, there was an NDP premier of Ontario who proved to be a Liberal in NDP clothing as he quickly ran away from his central campaign promise of a provincial car insurance program to match that of Quebec’s; which provides much lower insurance premiums than the private insurers. He paved the way for the lurch rightwards that brought the socially conservative and economically neoliberal Mike Harris into power in Ontario. I will not hold my breath for a true left wing populist leader of the NDP, even a soft left version. The NDP window of opportunity was lost with the death of Jack Leyton in 2011, who was more a social democratic progressive than a socialist, and the incompetence of Mulcair in the 2015 election.

So we will have Trump until 2029, Starmer (or his replacement) until 2029, and Carney until 2029. And Merz (Germany) until 2029, while France (Macron) and Italy (Meloni) have elections in 2027. Here the PM from Goldman Sachs meeting the President from Rothschilds.

The PM from Goldman Sachs meeting the Chancellor from Blackrock.

What a horrendous prospect, the world of North America and Western Europe will be a much worse place by the end of the 2020s. Even greater neoliberalism and authoritarianism it is, with a side of genocide and proxy war, followed by the open fascists? While climate change accelerates onwards and upwards. The only thing missing for the US oligarchy is a full-on China hating from France, Germany and Italy. We should expect overwhelming pressure from the US on them, and other European leaders, to fall fully in line with respect to China; with the US interfering to support alternative candidates if they do not.

Note: The British PM prior to Starmer, Rishi Sunak, has now been hired by Goldman Sachs - a firm that he previously worked at between 2001 and 2004.
